Get Out, Get Active! scheme

Get out Get Active (GOGA) is a new scheme being promoted by Disability Rights UK to get more disabled and non-disabled people taking part in, physical activity and sport together in their local area. It covers Manchester City, Wigan and Rochdale.

 

What are they doing in Manchester?

 

There are lots of inclusive activities happening in Manchester- from dance to climbing, from walking football to boccia. Some are free and some are very low-cost.

Disabled peer quits equality watchdog over ‘shameful downgrading of disability’

A disabled Tory peer has resigned as a board member of the equality watchdog over a government minister’s “collusion” with the decision not to appoint him as a disability commissioner.

Lord [Kevin] Shinkwin made the announcement in a speech in the House of Lords on Tuesday, during a debate on the human rights implications of Brexit.

Thousands of disability benefit tests branded 'unacceptable' by the government

'Thousands of disability benefit tests have been branded "unacceptable" by the government's own quality control scheme.

 

Bombshell new figures say neither Atos nor Capita - the outsourcing giants paid more than £500m to assess people for Personal Independence Payments (PIP) - are meeting the target of 97% of assessments conforming to standards.

 

Latest audits show 6.4% of PIP benefit assessments were deemed "unacceptable" in the three months to October 2017.

‘Cells – A Body Of Work’ is a live art installations created in response to the Manchester Evening News report, in October 2015, describing a 140% rise in reported hate crime incidents against people with disabilities.

Equality watchdog seeks legal advice on possible right to independent living

The equality watchdog has asked a barrister to examine whether there needs to be a legal right to independent living for disabled people, because of concerns that their rights to choice and control over their lives is being “eroded”.

The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) has asked the lawyer to assess how independent living is currently protected by law and whether “additional protections” are needed.

Oliver comes out of retirement to deliver stinging rebuke to ‘parasite’ charities

One of the key figures in the disabled people’s movement has come out of retirement to deliver a stinging rebuke to “parasitic” disability charities.

Professor Mike Oliver, the disabled academic who first defined the “social model of disability”, was speaking at an event hosted by the University of Kent last Wednesday, as part of UK Disability History Month.
